2007 Jr. King & Queen Pageant

First, I apologize for telling you I would be bragging again on Monday and we are already at Wednesday. My doctor recently made a change in my meds and my heart sort of rebelled. Suffice it to say, today is better than the past couple days. On to the bragging - - - Sunday night was the Jr. King and Queen Pageant at our church. Bryn was first runner-up and Blake won King. This is an annual fund-raiser to sponsor a national program, Save Our Children, and other projects within our church. A total of 16 children participated this year, and they raised over $3700 in less than ten weeks. Each child met the goal of $100 that rewards them with an out-of-town trip, and those that raise over $200 receive additional prizes. This year's queen, Daria, raised over $800. The out-of-town trip will be to a performance of Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus. During the pageant, each "princess" is announced, escorted down the center aisle, and the princes raise swords in the air as each princess passes. When they reach the stage, they turn and curtsy to the audience before taking their place. After the the queen is announced, the princes file to the front and are individually presented to the crowd. Of course, this royal court enjoys every moment of the spotlight. After each child had been announced and awards given, Blake and Bryn sang. They were followed by a song from the queen and her mother. It was a wonderful event. Of course, I take photos of each child and give their parents copies of all the pictures. This was Bryn's 3rd time to participate in this pageant. She has always placed, and now she is wanting to be queen. Who knows what will happen next year?! The competition is always stiff.

  1. Hi Jana, I didn't know you had heart problems. This s abad time to feel bad. (Like there's a good time. LOL) Your children look so nice for this contest. No wonder you brag. Love, Helen

  2. Hi, Helen - I have an enlarged heart and a small leak at one of the valves. The difficult thing to determine has been what is causing my heart to overwork. There has been consideration my lungs are not supplying enough oxygen to my heart. My heart rate is very erratic and frequently goes nuts. When they hooked me up for a stress test last year, my heart rate was 200 bpm BEFORE I got on the treadmill. Of course it doesn't stay that fast. Last year, I went through about nine different meds before my body settled into one. It seemed to be working, but then I had quite a bit of swelling last week (which is indicative of congestive heart failure) and my doctor gave me a supplemental med for the swelling. I think it was too much and I had a very bad episode on Monday. It left me very weak and sore in my chest. I do feel better and I don't usually talk about this problem. My Dad died of a massive heart attack, and I realize I may be genetically predisposed to the same. I just try not to think about it. One thing you can do for me - pray I can lose some more weight. In the last 14 months, I have lost about 30 pounds. My bone structure is small and I have too much weight on it. This can adversely affect my heart. I don't believe in diets, and my doctor doesn't either. He just said I need to find what works for me. I realize the only thing that truly works is to change my habits. I have refused to drink anything carbonated and I will drink water when I first feel hungry. This determines if I am hungry or just thirsty. I try to satisfy cravings as soon as possible so I don't binge, but I feel I have reached a plateau. If I could lose another 30 pounds, it would probably help my heart. I just don't know what step to take next.

Thanks for your compliments about the kids. I had got Bryn's dress on E-Bay and this is her 3rd pageant to wear it. I think I will have to find another dress for next year. I only paid $49 for the dress and she has used it more than I thought she would. Blake is growing so fast, I think he may be to men's sizes by next year. (Small men's)

  3. Congratulations to your kids! They look so nice! It looks like a great way to make money for SOC! I was Sunday School Director in Texas and a big part of SOC until this year.....so I especially notice when a fundraiser really works. We'll be praying about your heart episode.

  4. Gene - thanks for your compliments and also for your prayers. My brother-in-law has been the Western District Sunday School Director for several years and he resigned the position at our district conference a couple weeks ago. The jr. king/queen pageant is something we have done for several years as a fundraiser. It has been very successful and is also alot of fun. Last year they raised over $7000. Each year the number of participants change and there is always different kids. Not all of our kids participate. If you ever want to know more about it, e-mail. This works because we have incentives.
