Red Velvet Cake Recipe

Shortly following Christmas, I posted about my husband's famous Red Velvet Cakes. The response was so great that I decided to post the recipe. Maybe you will want to try it out for Valentine's Day. He claims you cannot substitute any item because it will not taste right nor turn out right. Follow the directions and enjoy!

Brian's Red Velvet Cake
1/2 cup shortening
1 & 1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp. cocoa
2 (1 oz.) bottles of red food coloring
1 tsp. baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp salt
2 & 1/4 cup sifted all-purpose flour
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. vinegar

Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs. Well! Mix cocoa and food coloring. Add to creamed mixture. Sift flour three times. (yes, Brian sifts it 3 times) Alternately add flour and buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour. Add vanilla. Mix vinegar and soda. Add to creamed mixture. Bake at 350. Grease and flour pans (three 9 inch cake tins). Bake 25 minutes.

Red Cake Frosting
2 cubes of Imperial margarine (He insist on Imperial)
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
3 heaping Tbsp. flour
1 cup milk

Cream Imperial margarine, sugar, and vanilla for 5 minutes with electric mixer. Mix milk and flour then cook over medium heat stirring constantly with a whisk until thickened. Set it aside until it is completely cool. After it is cool, add to creamed mixture. Mix well. (Like thick whipping cream) Set in fridge to chill for about 30 minutes. Mix again and then frost the cake. The secret to this frosting is enough patience to mix it long enough. Longer mixing makes better frosting.

  8. My hubby's birthday is next month so your timing is perfect. The only thing I'm concerned about is that many times it is the baker's special touch that makes all the difference. Think we could borrow Brian? Seriously, please tell him thank you for sharing his speciality with us.

Anonymous - sounds like you are familiar with this cake. It is the frosting that is key to its success.

  12. OK - Here's my proposal. Bro. Allard always accompanies you to Ladies Conference. And... since he has SO much time on his hands while he's there, And... because Ladies Conference is so very close to your home this year, And... because Ladies Conference is NOT the time to count calories. I propose a fund raiser for your church:

Sell pieces of "Bishop Allard's Red Velvet Cake Extraordinaire". I'm sure there's still a table available, and I'll be the first in line.

Ooooh - Oooooh - an even better idea:

After selling individual slices during the conference (to get everybody hooked), you can auction off an entire cake on the last day. Just THINK of all the money that would be raised for Mothers Memorial!

    Possibility?

  14. Holly, Holly, Holly...........Brian will give an offering before he would even consider making red cakes for ladies conference. Regardless of the fact we would not have a kitchen to work in, he won't spend that much time on cakes. Just one cake takes up alot of time. Sorry, it is not even a possibility. I know you meant well. LOL LOL LOL See you soon!

  16. I just wanted to stop by and say what a wonderful little gentleman Blake is. When I was leaving the church this evening, I made the comment on the porch steps that I didn't want to go to my car because it was pouring down rain and Blake said, "I'll walk you to your car" and he did. He held his umbrella over my head and walked me to my car and waited until I got into my vehicle and shut my door for me. He stole my heart this evening. You have a real gentleman on your hands. Blake was more concerned about me not getting wet than he was for himself. Give him a hug for me please and let him know how much I appreciated that.

  17. Jolene - You are right. Blake is a sweetheart. He has a very tender heart and is so caring. If I barely cough, he will quickly say, "Are you okay mommy?" If he thinks I am sick, he will come and put his hands on me and start praying. Yes, he is my sweetheart. He is a charmer too. Somedays when I wake him for school, he will say, "Mom, why can't we just stay here and cuddle all day?" Going to have beat the girls away in a few more years!
