Hearers or Doers

King James Version - But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
New International Version - Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

Have you ever heard a parent say something such as, "Don't just stand there. Get busy." I wonder if God ever looks at people sitting in the house of "worship" and wants to say, "Hey, don't just sit there. If you came to the house of worship then worship me!" Next time you are in a church service, consider if you are just listening or if you are acting. I'll let you in on a secret - it is so fun to be a doer.

P.S. As soon as my husband can figure out how to get YouTube to upload some video clips, I will post the WAY Quartet singing and Blake speaking at a recent Kidz Rally. Blake was too cute! And, Bryn sang her first solo with Kidz Choir. Maybe he can get that one to upload, too.

There is an old saying. "If you have time to lean, you have time to clean!"
I have often sat and wondered, how much of what we do, "For the Lord," Is just busy work with no real goal or commitment.

  2. Hi Jana, I wonder if this verse has anything to do with worship or if it means actions in the world. I wonder if it means that we ought to "act Christian" all the time - that dogma (or doctrine) isn't as important as how we treat others both in and out of the "church." Helen

  3. Mervi - thanks for dropping by. We do need goals and dedication.

Helen - I think I kind of played on this verse. I really don't think it is all about worship but thought it migh encompass it. Personally, I believe when it says "doers of the word" would mean to spread the love of Christ. I don't think it is a "doctrine" scripture but rather an encouragement to be Christ-like. And, as you stated, "...both in and out of the church."

  4. Sis Allard, I tend to agree with both you and Helen. We are to be Christ like in and out of church and spread the love of Christ but we are also suppose to worship Christ when we come to church and not just sit there for Psalms 100:4 KJV reads, "Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise..." If His word said to praise and worship when I enter in then I MUST praise and worship just like Brother White said the other night. That is being a doer and not just a hearer of his word. I want to hear His word and then apply His word to my life therefore becoming a doer of the word.

Besides it is fun and so refreshing too. :-]

  5. Jolene - I think we are all on the same page. Maybe just phrasing it a little different. Wasn't Bro. White great?!?!? He is 83 years old and I love him and Lil so much. I believe she is 85. They are TRUE friends in every sense of the word.
