What's Your Flavor?


A couple weekends ago, my husband performed a wedding ceremony for a young couple and we had to leave before the wedding cake was cut and served. Just before we left, I snapped a picture of the cake and my mind started whirling as I wondered if every layer was a different flavor, did the layers have fillings, and if so what kind. Have any of you been to weddings in the last few years and had "wedding cake" as in white cake? Everyone seems to want specialty flavors and fillings. Do you ever miss white wedding cake? The top picture is my wedding cake in 1979 and it was white decorated with fresh flowers. The second picture is the cake at the wedding I recently attended. I will have to admit that some of the specialty flavors and fillings are quite delicious, but there is just something special about white wedding cake. A thing of the past and something I miss.

  1. Jana, I am with you all the way. I have often been to weddings and just wanted the simplicity of a white wedding cake. To me there is nothing like it. Do you think we are showing our age?

  2. Hi Jana, My wedding cake was white. At the time, I don't think any other kind existed. Actually, I've never seen one other than white. I've eaten groom's cakes, which are chocolate, however. Helen

    Helen - Maybe it is more of a California thing. I don't know. It seems we attend weddings quite frequently. If not friends, than weddings my husband officiates. Nearly all the wedding cakes have different flavors for each layer and many of them have specialty type fillings. Strawberries, raspberries, custard, pudding, etc. Sometimes I just want a simple piece of white cake with white buttercream frosting.

  4. Specialty cakes are nice but sometimes they are so special that they do not enhance the taste buds. I am still a white cake with white butter cream frosting gal. By the way, loved seeing your wedding picture - it took me back to that day. My, how time flies.

  5. Wow, both of those cakes are beautiful in the pics! Can you believe this?-- I've never eaten just a white wedding cake before. All the weddings I've been to have had some sort of filling in their cakes, and I never eat the cake because of it. My aunt had a very light lemon cake, I believe, with buttercream frosting, and that was pretty awesome. However, I'd say personally, that it would be great to have any kind of wedding cake. ;)

  7. Karen - THAT day seems like just a day or two ago even though we both know it was 28 years ago.

    Janell - you are part of this young generation that didn't know wedding cakes were supposed to be white. :)

    Holly - Oh, gracious!!!! No, Karen is not married but if you know of a good candidate for her, let me know. LOL We need to find her a man! She was just at our church a couple weeks ago and I titled the file of pics with her name. I had several pics of her and WAY Quartet and, of course, the two or three wedding pics. LOL Funny you caught that!!!

  8. Both cakes are so beautiful, and you made a beautiful bride, Jana. We too married in 1979, and the time has flown. My cake was white also, but to be honest, I guess I've eaten so many white cakes that if I were getting married now, I would probably get a flavored one. But the cake would still need to be white on the outside at least!
