One day at camp, this cute little bird landed near the motorhome and Sparkles chased it underneath the rig. One of the senior campers, Eric, helped Bryn and Blake catch the bird and Eric wanted to take it home. They found a Capri Sun box, put the bird in it and added a carrot stick. Realizing camp wouldn't be over for a few more days, I took the kids to PetSmart and got "Polly" a cage and some cockatiel food. When the kids got back to camp with the cage, they were so excited and wanted to find Eric to show him their "surprise" for him. Polly loves to sing and is now living in Northern California somewhere near the Bay area with Eric and his family.

I'm not much of a bird person, but this is a pretty one. I wonder how she got where she was.
ReplyDeleteHelen - That is a question we wondered about, too. We talked to some people who had been around the camp for many years and they said simiar birds have been caught in the same area in previous years. There weren't any missing bird reports and Eric is very happy to have Polly as part of his family.
ReplyDeleteRefreshing story, and what a pretty little bird. Glad it has found a good home.
ReplyDeleteKaren - my kids got such a huge kick out of going to the pet store and getting food and a cage for this bird. Then, they found Eric and brought him to the motorhome to surprise him. Eric thought they wanted to keep the bird and I explained to him they wanted to do this for him. His eyes got so big with surprise when he realized Blake and Bryn wanted to give him the cage. It was a great moment for all of them.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to practice generosity. Your kids got the fun of shopping and the joy of giving.
ReplyDeleteHelen - I want my kids to develop a cheerful spirit of charity and generosity. There are times we will empty our freezer and take food to people we know are struggling. We have even bought and wrapped presents for children we knew were not getting any presents during the holidays. We are just an average family but we have learned it is more blessed to give than receive. My kids are also learning "...give and it shall be given unto you..." I hope I am instilling the right things in my kids. Pray for me.

Cynthia - thanks for your response to my blog and letting us know you are enjoying Polly. The kids were excited to hear about Polly's new home and her huge cage. I guess you will have to get Eric to sprinkle her with water in Jesus' name. LOL
