Real Heroes Are Committed

Real heroes are men who fall and fail and are flawed, but win out in the end because they've stayed true to their ideals and beliefs and commitments
- Actor Kevin Costner
Over 20 years ago, my husband preached a message titled, "Your Failures Are Not Fatal." Throughout the years, he has received requests to preach this message and numerous comments from people saying how the message helped them. Failure is not what kills but rather the refusal to try again. If you fall, get up quickly, try again, and stay committed.

  1. Personal opinion!
The only fatal failure is the failure that keeps you down.

  2. Amen!!!

I agree with Mervi. It is only fatal when you refuse to get back up and try again. I tell students all the time, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again!"

  3. Awesome quote, and Brian's message is needed even more so in this day and age. We can never allow ourselves to stay down. I found a picture the other day, and it made me think along these same lines. Perhaps sometime I will be able to use it.

  4. Excellent quote and thought. So glad our failures don't have to be fatal. It's like the title of the book Alan Oggs wrote a few years ago - You've Gotta Get Up Again.

  5. Sometimes real heroes are simply in the right place at the right time and choose to do good.

  6. Tracie - me, too.

    Mervi - I agree.

Jana Mc - I have heard many times the quote you mention. That is a good one, too.

Karen - Brian has preached that message many times and several times it was requested. He preached it at Sr. Camp one year and it was quite effective.

Carol - I love Bro. Oggs. I remember when he preached, "Today is the first day, of the rest of your life..." It was at a general conference in Miami, Florida and I believe it was around 1972.

Helen - I get what you are saying but I somewhat disagree. The person who chooses to do good in a heroic moment was already a committed hero. The act of heroism was when their heroism became public. I believe they had the character of a hero all along.

  7. Helen - I had a feeling you would. We tend to think quite similar on such topics. :)
